14. Billings Stone Cottage

Located on the southwest corner of School Street and Elm Street, Billings Stone Cottage is a Federal period cottage that was constructed by stonemason P.P. Billings (who moved to Essex after working on the Champlain Canal) using gray limestone quarried immediately behind the house.

The cottage was built (circa 1828) on land purchased by wealthy Essex merchants Ransom and Harmon Noble. Their descendants owned and maintained it for over 100 years, often using it as a tenant house.

Simple construction and meticulous stonework indicate the solidity and permanence of this otherwise understated building. The exterior walls expose the rectangular and square stones used to construct the building on the sides and front, while the back is composed of rubble stone.

The twelve-over-twelve sash windows and front door with sidelights add a little lightness to this Federal cottage.
